Sheriff of Nottingham Debate

Hello, help settle a debate between me and a friend. We were playing Sheriff of Nottingham (3 person game) and my friend “Will,” is the sheriff. We declare goods as normal and Will starts grilling my other friend as these games go. He spends a fair amount of time grilling him, so long that he forgets what I declared. In an effort to get him to pay fines on my legal goods, when he asks me to remind him what I declared, I fake him out by saying the truthful answer and the pretending to correct it. It works, and he opens my bag, and gets pissed when he has to pay the fine for me being truthful. We argued for a bit, as he said I lied about my declaration and I just think he’s mad he forgot. Opinions?
