What’s the expectation for kids to play different positions?
My son (10) is in his third year of little league, first year of kid pitch.
At the very end of the last season, he got put in at the pitchers position and at first base for a few games. He did really well in those positions and got quite a few people out at home and first, respectively. Going into this season, he was really excited to play first base. He has the same coaches this year as last year, so they knew his capabilities.
Fast forward to this season. The first couple of games, he’s in the outfield. Ok, no big deal, the kids have to take turns (or so we thought). He started to express frustration, so my husband & I suggested he ask his coaches if he could be on first. Over and over again, the answer was no and he was sent to the outfield.
Finally, last week, they put him on first in the final inning of the game. At the very first opportunity he made an awesome play and got the batter out at first. He won the game ball and everything. There was only two games left in the season at that point, but we thought hey, at least now they’ve seen what he can do (again) and the next couple games he’ll get to play in the infield again.
Nope. Yesterday was their second to last game of the season- he was in the outfield the entire game. He was so discouraged by the end (not least of all because they lost 11-1). He had been so proud of his play in the previous game and thought for sure he’d get another chance.
Now look. I know my child is no prodigy. He’s a kid of average ability who just loves to play baseball. But my idea of LL was that kids would be rotated around (as they have in the last couple seasons he played). Not much happens in the outfield at this stage of the game, basically it’s just spectating- shouldn’t they all take their turn at it?
FWIW- we’ve also lost almost every single game this season, so it’s not like the coaches have hit on some secret magic formula.
Am I totally wrong in thinking that the kids should be getting more opportunities to try out the different positions? I’d really like to make sure I’m not just being a Karen.
