Feeling Like Giving Up on Relationships After a Workplace Incident
I’ve been struggling with anxiety for a while, but today something happened at work that really hit me hard.
A female coworker reported me for making her uncomfortable. The thing is, we regularly talked and worked together on assignments, and I never tried to flirt with her or pursue anything romantic. As far as I know, our interactions were normal. I don’t know if it was something I said, how I came across, or if there was a misunderstanding, but I honestly don’t know what I did wrong.
Since finding out, I’ve been questioning everything about how I interact with people. I already have a hard time making friends and connecting with others, and this situation has made me feel like maybe I should just stop trying altogether. It feels like whenever I get comfortable around people, I end up becoming a problem without realizing it.
Part of me wants to withdraw completely, keep conversations strictly work-related, and avoid forming any kind of personal connection with coworkers or anyone else. I’ve even started wondering if I should look for a work-from-home job so I don’t have to worry about situations like this happening again.
At the same time, I know isolating myself probably isn’t the healthiest response. I’m trying to figure out how to move forward, learn from this if I did something wrong, and not let it completely change how I view myself or other people.
Has anyone been through something similar? How do you handle being told you made someone uncomfortable when you genuinely didn’t mean to and don’t know what caused it?
