Business Admin Transfer Student Wondering What To Specialize in?
I’ve just finished my first year at community college as a Business Administration major and have been doing more research on what path will best help me reach my career goals.
Since I live in the Bay Area, my main transfer options are UC Berkeley and SFSU. Both have strong business programs, but I’m currently deciding whether I should focus more on accounting or finance.
One thing I’ve noticed is that neither school offers a standalone finance or accounting bachelor’s degree. SFSU offers a Business Administration degree with a concentration in Accounting, along with a 5-year master’s pathway, which seems like a great value and would be significantly cheaper than Berkeley. On the other hand, if I wanted to pursue finance, Berkeley seems like the stronger option due to its reputation, coursework, and recruiting opportunities.
My goals are to have a high-paying career with strong long-term earning potential (ideally $200k+ eventually), decent work-life balance, and some flexibility in my career. I’m okay with occasional busy seasons, which is one reason I’ve been leaning toward accounting.
For those of you who studied accounting or finance, or work in either field, which path would you recommend and why? Looking back, would you make the same choice again?
