Should I restart with my friend?

I convinced one of my friends to get into the game. I was wondering if it's worth it to start a new character with him. It's been a few years since I've played. I know both players have to watch cutscenes individually before being able to join the others story missions. This was pushing me towards just starting a new weapon tree on an already established character to play with him.
