[THEORY] I think we just independently decoded the last 18 characters of the Z408 cipher — and it points to a real person nobody has seriously investigated
For context: the Z408 is the Zodiac Killer's first cipher, sent to three San Francisco newspapers in July 1969. 390 of its 408 characters were solved within a week by schoolteachers Donald and Bettye Harden in 1969. The decoded message begins: "I like killing people because it is so much fun..."
The last 18 characters have never been officially solved. For 55 years.
After so much time we decode a name, a real name and he was "ROBERT THE HIPPIE"
LET'S EXPLAIN WHY AND HOW:
When you apply the Harden key to the last 18 symbols, you get:
E B E O R I E T E M E T H H P I T I
Every researcher who has looked at this calls it "gibberish" and moves on. We didn't.
We know from the solved cipher that the Zodiac assigned 7 different symbols to the letter E — more than any other letter. He used E-symbols as his most available filler characters throughout the cipher.
Hypothesis: The E's are structural padding, not content. He needed exactly 408 symbols to split evenly into three equal parts of 136 for the three newspapers. His message ran out at 390. He needed 18 more symbols. He padded with his most available symbol — E variants — placed between the real letters of his hidden signature.
Forrest instead of forest
Paradice instead of paradise...
He consistently manipulates letters. The E padding fits his exact pattern.
Remove every E from EBEORIETEMETHHPITI=B O R I T M T H H P I T I
Look at the sequence: B O R I T M T \[HH\] P I T I
HH. In the entire English language, no real word contains a double-H. It is not a spelling variation. It is not a typo. It appears deliberately in the middle of this sequence
We propose HH is a boundary marker.
FORREST doubles the R at a word boundary, HH appears at a name boundary here.
Left side: B O R I T M T =BORITMT contains the letters R, O, B, T, E(dropped), R(extra consonant added) = ROBERT
This is exactly how he wrote FORREST — added an extra R, same consonant. BORITMT → ROBERT with his characteristic extra-T and letter rearrangement.
Right side: P I T I=PITI → swap I for E and add his characteristic doubled consonant = PITTIE or HIPPIE
Three independent methods — E-stripping, reversal analysis, and positional pattern — all converge on the same ROBERT + HIPPIE reading.
A note for you: The Zodiac sent the Chronicle the specific third of the cipher that contains these 18 characters. And it was only the Chronicle's letter that said "In this cipher is my identity." He wasn't talking about the full 390-character message. He was talking about the Chronicle's portion specifically — the end — where these 18 characters live.
Now read carefully.
This is where it gets serious.
Robert L. Williams. Born March 2, 1943. American artist and cartoonist.
Location: In 1968, Williams moved to San Francisco and joined the Zap Comix underground art collective. The Zodiac's killings began in December 1968 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Same city. Same year.
Age: Born 1943. In 1968–1969 he was 25–26 years old. The FBI profile of the Zodiac described a white male in his late 20s to early 40s during the murders. Williams fits exactly.
Intelligence: Williams is documented as having extraordinary rhetorical ability, deep symbolic thinking, and a mind that operated on multiple levels simultaneously. The Zodiac's letters and ciphers — layered, symbolic, taunting — reflect exactly this kind of intelligence. This is not the writing of a chaotic person. It is the writing of someone who thinks in symbols and systems. An artist's mind.
Williams's art throughout the 1960s and 1970s was defined by violence, death, dark psychedelia, apocalypticism, and a deliberate transgression of social boundaries
And the fun fact is The Zodiac openly mocked police in every letter, taunted investigators, and seemed to derive pleasure from being uncatchable
Williams's work was circulating in San Francisco in 1968–1969 — exactly when the Zodiac was sending letters specifically to the San Francisco Chronicle. The Chronicle was the paper of record for the counterculture scene Williams inhabited.
"I WILL NOT GIVE YOU MY NAME BECAUSE YOU WILL TRY TO SLOW DOWN MY COLLECTING OF SLAVES FOR MY AFTERLIFE" The Zodiac.
But he did.
