Dog peeing in house
Going on 2-1/2 months now, I adopted a new ~1 year old boy pug, Fry. I’ve had a pug before with my ex so I was mostly prepared. I also have a 10 year old mixed breed boy dog, Abe.
Fry was a stray before I adopted him. He didn’t know any commands. Didn’t want to sleep in his crate through the night. He has no known medical issues, has been looked over by the rescue org’s vet and my regular vet. He’s gotten along well with Abe, as much as the old man will allow. He’s learned to sleep through the night and that when I have to put him in the crate when I have to leave not to freak out, that I’m coming home soon. He’s learned sit, a little stay, cage (to go in the crate) with a little stubbornness but progress every day, and I’m working on his leash manners.
The only real issue I’ve had with him is peeing and to a lesser degree pooping in the house. I work from home so he’s with me basically 100% of the time and if I have to go somewhere he goes in his crate. At first I tried to give him a bit of leeway and left him in the kitchen if say I was taking a shower, but he pooped in the kitchen. I had him gated out of the kitchen for 10 minutes or so while I was in the kitchen talking with a contractor and he pooped in the kids playroom. This has happened a few times, in the playroom. So now I give him no chance, if I can’t keep eyes on him, he’s in the crate. This has worked, except for this morning. I let him and Abe out when they first get up, they both pooped but I didn’t see them pee. Then I took Fry with me upstairs while I got ready to go out on a run. While I’m standing there lightly playing with him and changing my clothes, he flips around and just lifts his leg on my bed! He’s played and cuddled on my bed dozens of times before. I immediately yanked him up and ran him outside. And now at bedtime with my kids, he’s running around upstairs while they brush their teeth, my kids keep their doors closed because he likes to grab toys off the ground, but he’s always within view in the hallway. I go to tuck my son in and find out his bed is wet! This is the third time, always in the exact same spot on his bed. I honestly have no idea when he’s finding the time to get in there and pee on his bed, the door is ALWAYS closed.
When I first got him he had a blanket with him that stunk terribly so I washed it twice and kept it in his crate with him. Found out he was peeing on that while he was locked up. Threw that away and got a bed that fit and so far, as far as I can tell, that has gone away.
When he has pooped in the house it has never seemed like he couldn’t hold it and had to find a spot, it’s always felt very vengeful, like he’s upset that I’m ignoring him for 10-15 minutes and he goes to an area that is not his area and poops.
How do I house train a dog that I can’t catch in the act? I’m doing everything I can to keep him with me as close to 100% of the time as I can and he’s finding narrow windows and pottying in someway where he’s not supposed to. I do shower him with praise and say “potty” a lot when he goes potty outside so he can start to learn it somewhat as a command.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the wall of text, I’m just trying to give some context that, honestly, to me, it doesn’t feel like he doesn’t know he’s not supposed to going potty in the house, more that he just WANTS to when he’s pissed at me.
