Persistent smell in Black & Decker portable dishwasher (BPD8B) - need troubleshooting ideas

Troubleshooting

Hey everyone,

I’m dealing with a stubborn odor in a secondhand Black & Decker BPD8B portable dishwasher. Replacing it isn't financially an option right now, so I really need to fix it. I'm worried to call someone to look at it and it costing a lot of money. I bought it preowned for $200 and was expecting it to be imperfect, and needing deep cleaned. But a persistsnt odor was never disclosed to me.

The smell lingers on dishes after a wash. The scent has gotten better overall, especially after I cleaned the sprayer arms and found what looked like little mushrooms growing inside. The unit definitely sat unused for a while before I got it, which is likely part of the issue.

The problem is I've cleaned everywhere I know how to, and I can't find the source of the smell. It smells like dirty dishwasher. I really need a dishwasher as standing at the sink to handwash causes me excurating pain. I'm frustrated and feel like a sucker for thinking the dishwasher was a good find. Here is what I’ve done so far for the odor.

Took apart and cleaned the filter, internal sump area, door gaskets, and spray arms. I also pulled the hoses off and thoroughly scrubbed the insides.

Ran hot cycles with all of these things vinegar, citric acid, baking soda, dissolved OxiClean, and bleach (bleach helped the most, but still smelling it.

The drain hose is elevated higher than the sink drain line to prevent wastewater backflow.

The rinse aid dispenser is missing its indicator lens. I flushed the rinse aid tank with bleach and hot water.

Has anyone dealt with this specific Black & Decker portable model and found a hidden odor trap? Or is there an internal component/step I'm completely overlooking? Or is this possinly a mechanical issue of some type? It drains but I am wondering if it's draining well enough?
