New player advice

Hi all, I bought scum earlier today and only got as far as the character creator because I assumed it was like DayZ, but the skills menu threw me off. How important are the stats/skills pick at the start? Are they capped in the game, or can I just level them all up to Max? Also, any other hard earned tips and tricks would be appreciated :)
