How do I go about building my first pc?

I have used prebuilt pcs for the past maybe like 6 years and have thought they have been lackluster and always having some sort of issue or maybe not being able to run the games I want to try. I would just like to know how much a good pc would cost what parts I need to get to run mainstream games like the forza series or the new battlefield for example.
