you didn't become soft all at once. you just never noticed the thousand times you chose not to be hard.

There wasn't a moment. that's the thing that messed me up when I finally thought about it.

There was no day where I woke up and decided I wasn't going to do hard things anymore. it just happened in this slow, invisible way. I skipped the cold shower once because I was tired. I left the uncomfortable conversation for later and later became never. I took the easier route on a run because I told myself I'd push harder next time. small stuff. stuff that felt like nothing.

except none of it was nothing.

your brain is literally doing math on you every time you make a choice. there's this process in neuroscience called synaptic pruning, basically your nervous system trimming the paths you don't use and reinforcing the ones you do, and it doesn't care what your intentions are. it only cares what you actually did. so every time you chose comfort over discomfort, your brain got a little better at choosing comfort. every time you backed down from something hard, backing down became slightly more automatic. you didn't decide to be a person who avoids hard things. you just trained yourself into it one small perfectly reasonable decision at a time.

I read something once about behavioral consistency and identity, the idea that your sense of self isn't built from what you think about yourself, it's built from what you watch yourself do. which sounds obvious until you sit with it. because that means the guy you think you are and the guy you're actually becoming are two completely different projects, and they only match if your choices match.

what got me was realizing I could still remember being the kind of person who didn't need to be talked into hard things. just did them. not even dramatically, just as a default. somewhere in the last few years that guy became someone I was nostalgic about instead of someone I was.

the uncomfortable part isn't that you made bad decisions. it's that most of them didn't feel like decisions at all.

a choice only feels like a choice when you pause before you make it. when you don't pause, it's just habit dressed up as a preference. and if your habits have been quietly drifting toward easier and easier for long enough, one day you look up and realize you've built a version of yourself you didn't agree to.

the fix isn't complicated. it's just uncomfortable, which is probably why most people don't do it. every time there are two options and one is harder, you pick that one. not because suffering is the point, but because the man you become is the average of every small decision you didn't think mattered.

turns out they all mattered.
