I want fewer students shadowing me
I do critical care clinical pharmacy. The last 4 students have done all their clinical stuff entirely with me even though I'm not their preceptor, and we have several other clinical pharmacists. They might spend 3 days shadowing the ID pharmacist and then it's back with me.
They're great and once I train them up enough, they DO help my workload by either researching things I ask them to while I clean up house, or by working up pts for rounds on a basic level while I take care of more complicated tasks.
However, I never shut up, omg. I spend all day every day talking to teach the students, or answer their questions, or talking them through doing clinical tasks. And if I'm not talking to them, I'm talking to intensivists, RNs, and other pharmacy staff.
I'm an introvert and I miss being able to just sit in silence at least some of the time while I'm working up patients. The constant interacting has me very drained at the end of the day, moreso than even when I was in retail.
If I wanted to teach all the time, I'd have applied for work at my university. I'm gonna have to tell my bosses that they should pick certain blocks for ICU and stick to those cause if I have a constant revolving door of new students all year round, I'm going to get burnt out and the students won't get the experience they deserve. And I don't want to compromise in the sense of "oh we'll just give them half days so they can spend the mornings with you and the afternoons with the techs" or whatever. I want full days to myself. The other option would be to allow me to precept the students in a designated ICU rotation so I have the authority to tell them to only show up on certain days.
