The Theory of Recursive Reality: A Unified Framework of Self-Generating Systems Across Physics, Biology, Cognition, Economics, and Culture
I would like to propose a highly theoretical framework called Recursive Reality Theory (RRT).
The central proposition is that reality is not fundamentally composed of matter, energy, information, consciousness, or social relations alone. Instead, reality consists of recursive systems that generate, modify, and reproduce the rules by which they themselves operate.
The theory begins with a simple principle:
Any sufficiently complex system will eventually become an object of its own operations.
This principle appears across numerous disciplines.
Physics
Physical reality exhibits recursion through self-referential structures. The universe produces observers who subsequently construct models of the universe itself. In this sense, cosmology becomes a recursive loop in which reality observes and theorizes itself.
Quantum measurement, observer effects, and feedback systems suggest that observation is not merely passive but becomes part of the system being observed.
Mathematics
Gödel’s incompleteness theorems demonstrate that sufficiently powerful formal systems can generate statements about themselves.
Mathematics therefore contains an intrinsic recursive structure:
S \rightarrow S(S)
where a system S becomes capable of representing itself.
The history of mathematics can be interpreted as increasing layers of self-reference: arithmetic, meta-arithmetic, metamathematics, category theory, and higher-order logical systems.
Biology
Life may be understood as matter becoming recursively organized.
A cell contains instructions for producing structures that preserve and reproduce those same instructions.
Evolution itself is a recursive optimization process:
G_{n+1}=F(G_n)
where each generation acts upon the process that generates future generations.
Cognitive Science
Human cognition displays multiple recursive layers:
perception of perception
thought about thought
memory of memory
consciousness of consciousness
Metacognition may therefore represent a general principle rather than a uniquely psychological phenomenon.
Intelligence could be defined as:
The capacity of a system to recursively model its own operations.
Economics
Markets generate behaviors that alter the markets themselves.
Economic expectations influence economic outcomes.
Financial systems become recursive when predictions affect the very variables being predicted.
Economic development can be viewed as society recursively increasing its ability to transform the conditions of future production.
Sociology
Institutions create norms.
Norms create behaviors.
Behaviors reinforce or transform institutions.
Social systems therefore operate through recursive feedback loops across generations.
Culture can be understood as society remembering and modifying itself over time.
Technology
Technology increasingly becomes recursive.
Humans create tools.
Tools create better tools.
Artificial intelligence contributes to the creation of new artificial intelligence.
The history of technology can be modeled as an accelerating recursion:
T_{n+1}=T_n+f(T_n)
where technological capability becomes an input into its own expansion.
Philosophy
Many classical philosophical problems may be reinterpreted through recursion:
Consciousness: reality becoming aware of itself.
Knowledge: information modeling itself.
Ethics: systems evaluating their own rules.
Metaphysics: existence describing existence.
The traditional division between subject and object may emerge only after recursive processes reach a sufficient level of complexity.
Core Hypothesis
Recursive Reality Theory proposes that all major forms of complexity emerge from a common process:
R_{n+1}=R_n+\Phi(R_n)
where systems recursively act upon their own structure, generating higher-order organization.
Under this framework:
Life is recursive chemistry.
Mind is recursive life.
Culture is recursive mind.
Technology is recursive culture.
Theory itself is recursive knowledge.
The deepest question is therefore not “What is reality made of?” but rather:
Is recursion itself the fundamental generative principle underlying physical, biological, cognitive, social, and technological complexity?
If so, could recursion occupy a role analogous to causation, symmetry, or information as a universal principle spanning all domains of inquiry?
