OLED Experience as a normal user and game developer.
First of all, i came from a good VA Panel, so the "deep blacks" weren't something new to me, and the first boot was really... not that different.
If you bought OLED for the "deep blacks" and "infinite contrast", when you actually get the panel you will definitely notice it, yeah, but you'll also come to the conclusion "This isn't really life changing as people made it sound like..."
BUT if you're somebody who, after getting your LCD panel you used to calibrate white point, gamma, color saturation (most LCD "gaming" panels will have oversaturated sRGB) you will absolutely tell the difference...
Or maybe you don't even need to do all that to notice a difference, if you used to prefer watching content on your phone because whatever monitor you had on your setup somehow looked worse, OLED will just be the PERFECT pick for you.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most OLED reviews focus heavily on contrast comparisons and dark scene shots, which i think misses some of the benefits that became more obvious after living with the panel.
So, What made OLED click for me?
-> Screen uniformity is just bonkers... compared to what i owned before there's no such thing as:
- vignetting
- dirty-screen effect
- corner darkening
- color shift across the panel
Things at the corner (or just anywhere on the screen) are just PERFECT. For me it was simply awesome to have my IDE perfectly consistent accross all areas.
->Color accuracy, my monitor has sRGB, DCI-P3 and Wide Gamut color profiles, and surprisingly enough both are compliant to the specs! sRGB just isn't oversaturated and the screen settings are... accurate!
-> Motion response time, i guess this is obvious, Who's slower? Sending voltage to an emitter or physically rotating crystals!?
Jokes apart, i think it's excellent because it makes the "Dark sky, bright stars" scene not get fully smeared in motion, it's also INCREDIBLE to visualize particle effects in games.
-> HDR... Perfect. It's literally what helped me master the HDR picture in my game.
Now to a more specific point:
This is probably the main thing i notice, and i wish that people would correct me if i'm wrong.
LCD just has this weird "haze" appearance everywhere you look if the content is not bright enough while OLED pixels look weirdly "smooth" and "direct"
I guess this is just because OLED and LCD are nowhere close, even though their goal is a picture both can reproduce, OLED is essentially looking directly at illuminated pixels while on LCD you're looking at light that got filtered through many layers and was guided with crystals until reaching your eyes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last point, burn-in...
I'm not really worried at all about burn-in, as with anything we buy, we buy to consume and "degrade" from the original state otherwise used things wouldn't have a lower price, so if i have to display bright static content for 8 hours straight at maximum brightness... it is what it is, i bought this display to... See it!
Overall? 10/10. A 10/10 product doesn't need to be flashy and crazy, it just needs to feel comfortable and premium.
