Sarumarine is easily my favorite boss from 64 "Arrrrrgh!" but I'd forgotten how amazingly-designed the fight was
...because by your 3rd and subsequent playthroughs, you're become accustomed to the pattern. Bomb the pipes, bomb the crane, etc. Watching a YT video right now of someone completing the entire fight as intended, I'd forgotten how well-crafted it was, and how it's a shame you can really only "experience" it like that the first time.
You start off by realizing your lasers don't hit anything. Ok no biggie. You start using the bombs provided. Bomb the side-barge, it sunk, great right! But wait, Pirate Bro just submerges and comes back up with it fully salvaged, and you're back to square one. Huh... this is completely unlike any of the other boss fights so far, you realize. Eventually you figure out the pipes, but then Sea Dog Dude just lifts it up from the water, and again you've done no damage. Dafuq? Eventually you figure out the crane too. Then the last salvo, I dunno, it's just such a cool fight. It's really unlike anything else in the game. Like if they ever made a SF movie, please please let this guy be in it.
Another related topic is Bucco Bae's attack patterns and banter. By just breezing through the fight every subsequent play-through, I'd always miss these amazing parts as well. It also sucks for him that he has this incredible machine of war, evidenced by the dozens of weapons and mechanics he's capable of throwing at you, but if you're and experienced player, you basically completely neuter him in a matter of seconds 😂
