Having a hard time incorporate PC's backstories into the campaign

I've almost always done homebrew campaigns, so I was a little naive on how to make their stories included without "cramming them in." Fundamentally, the story is about barovia, so it's just a bit more difficult... What did y'all do? Any tips?
