Any tips on switching instruments for a solo?

The girl who previously played piccolo has become Junior drum major and now there is a new spot open for piccolo. I've been practicing a lot over the summer on the piccolo and I really want to get it, but there might be a problem. I have a solo on flute because that's what I played previously, but my director said that I might not work on piccolo because it would be hard to play pic and then switch to flute for a solo and then switch back for the rest of the show. There are also a few other girls who want to play pic, but I think I'm the only one who's been practicing over the summer. Any advice though?
