I pretend to be doing way better than I actually am because my family thinks I “made it”

I don’t really know how to say this without sounding pathetic, but my family thinks I’m doing great and I’ve been letting them believe it for years. I moved away, got a job in a decent field, post normal pictures, answer calls like everything is fine. To them I’m the one who “got out” and became stable. My mom tells relatives I’m doing amazing. My younger cousins ask me for career advice. My uncle once said I’m proof that “hard work pays off” and I just smiled like I wasn’t going home to eat cereal for dinner and ignore my overdue emails.

The truth is I’m barely holding it together. I’m not homeless or in some huge disaster, so I know it could be worse, but I’m nowhere near the version of me they talk about. My job sounds better than it feels, I’m behind on basic adult stuff, my apartment is messy most of the time, I avoid checking certain accounts because I don’t want to see the numbers, and some weekends I don’t leave my place at all. I keep telling my family I’m just busy. Busy is such a useful lie because nobody questions it too much.

The worst part is that I’ve kind of trapped myself in the role. If I admit I’m struggling, it won’t just be “I need help.” It’ll feel like I’m ruining this image they’ve built of me. My mom has enough stress already and I hate the thought of making her worry. So I keep doing the voice on the phone, the little jokes, the “yeah work is good,” the “I’m just tired.” Sometimes I wish one of them would notice I’m not okay, but I also do everything possible to make sure they don’t. I don’t even know what I want from posting this. I guess I’m just tired of being the successful one when I feel like I’m quietly falling apart.
