Dad's Attempting EC with a Boy
Yesterday was my first day really trying EC with my 7-month-old son.
When he woke up, I gave him an opportunity, but I think I waited too long and missed because he had already peed in his diaper. After he ate, I gave him another opportunity, and he missed again. Later, I sat him in his Bumbo while I was making a bottle and noticed he was actively pooping. I missed that one, too, but it was the first time I had actually seen him pooping in real time.
After that, I started looking for opportunities around transitions like wake-ups, after feeds, after a walk, and before activities. By the end of the day, I got 3 pee catches. One of them happened when he got really wiggly during a feed, and I thought he might need to go.
I feel like the first day went pretty well, and I probably got a little lucky, too. The biggest thing I learned is that transitions seem really important. Looking back, I think I should have taken him straight to the toilet when he woke up instead of waiting. Some of my catches also happened around transitions.
What surprised me most is that the catches weren't the best part. The best part was starting to pay attention to his patterns and cues. Even the misses taught me something.
Day 1:
- 8 opportunities
- 3 pee catches
- 0 poop catches
- 2 poop misses
I'm going to keep tracking for the next couple of weeks and see what I learn.
