Masters of the Universe Kinda Feels Like Van Halen's Diver Down?

Okay – fully admit this is a reach, but I was in a summery Van Halen mood and the parallels kinda were sticky in my brain pan.

So Im a late era Gen X-er/Xellenial – fully in the bag for the new Masters movie – I thought it was good enough, I feel like for fans of the IP the level of tolerance kinda depends where you plant your flag for He-Man?

Its fully springboarding off of the 80s Filmation take, so big camp - it’s colorful and had little ‘hell yeah’ moments - but (and not to be that bitch) not the high fantasy product for 40+ year old fanboys that I mighta MOST wanted?

That all said - Theres enough MOTU out there that the version I most want to see has been … atleast brushed up against – take my silly and treat it serious (what with the Classics, the 200X cartoon and the Kevin Smith stuff – more integrative of all the other lore and such)

But! I LOVE the Filmation cartoon obviously - So I dont want to be like ‘This isnt EXACTLY the cake I ordered’

ANYWAYS – the fuck does that have to do with 'Diver Down'?

So – ‘Diver’ I think is the weakest of the Dave era albums (excluding ADKOT) – but! Its fun. And it too has its little ‘Hell Yeah’ moments (the guitar interstitials between the covers especially).

Id say both are:

• Too reliant on existing material. Almost half of Diver is covers? and the originals are short
• So, both are more interested in nostalgia than innovation.
• Id say that they're both tonally inconsistent, lacking a... focused identity.
• Both were/are criticized as a commercial product first and an artistic statement second.

What's interesting is that the things critics disliked about 'Diver Down' and Masters are exactly what many fans ended up loving tho:

• The variety.
• The unpredictability.
• The sense that theyre just having fun.
• The willingness to embrace its influences instead of chasing "serious art."

Again – a reach.  I don’t think either are the perfect take on what they represent. But! Both lean hard into the fun, colorful, slightly chaotic spirit of what they are.
