Well I did it ...hello hybrids

General Discussion

So I've always been a long iron player since forever , back in the day a 1 iron was a staple in my bag and till a little while ago still carried a 2 iron, and as you may or may not know they are equivalent to a 1 iron from back in the day .

Ive been watching Freddie Couples about his iron swap for woods/hybrids and became intrigued, he kept mentioning why would I ever hit a 4 iron again.....let alone a 2 iron .

So with a call to my Wilson Staff rep a 2, 3 and 4 hybrid were dropped of for me and out came my 2, 3 and 4 irons .

I didnt even mess around with the range I went right out on the course to the holes I would use them , I was apprehensive at first , you know the deal, you cant control distance with them , they have too much offset you'll hook everything then start pushing to compensate, ugly at address etc etc .

Well .......I teed up the 2 hybrid and swung ......then teed up another ......and another......etc you get the picture .

After going out to the fairway and removing the blanket the balls were all under I went to a long par 3 did the same, hit the green on all shots the ball stopped in a reasonable amount etc , yes thats happened with my long irons but what I didnt tell you is half of those shots were misses , misses that would not be on a green with a long iron , no matter how good you are with them .

Been playing them for a little while now and I can say I've never hit so many GIR in quite a while with such ease.

Are there drawbacks ? Yes, I play staff model blades so they look terrible behind the ball, they dont feel all that great and they dont sound all that great (to me anyway)

I can ignore all that , but what I cant ignore is the ease of performance.

This is a big deal for me , im a club snob and dont mind admitting it , played nothing but blades my whole life and this was a huge leap , but with my age I thought id give it a try ....will they stay in the bag ? As of now absolutely yes .but the snobbery may rear its ugly head .

My irons arev7 thru pw , 52* and *60 .
