Am I insane for thinking this way?
I am a 25yo who works within financial regulatory.
Every damn day, I am berated with AI products, AI conversations, and AI doom/gloom scenarios from industry insiders, CEOs, politicians, and accomplices.
I thought about continuing my education - well apparently that’s dead. Well I’ll hunker down at my current job but oh wait it uses a computer - well apparently that’s dead. Maybe I’ll throw everything away after I pay off my students loans and go into a trade - oh wait apparently that will be dead once everyone else does the same thing. 62% of jobs in the United States are considered desk jobs.
To me, this seems like an atom bomb just waiting to turn every damn thing I know totally upside down. And apparently I’m insane to believe that’s a logical conclusion considering I and everybody else just wakes up everyday, goes to work, and waits for chaos to ensue to get some sort of unprecedented government/societal overhaul. “Oh we‘ll get UBI” - the fuck are you talking about? We can’t even properly fund K-12 education in this country yet in the near future I’m supposed to be paid to sit on my ass for 45 years? I’m already lazy according to older generations.
“Learn AI” is the most naive, braindead take I have ever heard in my life. I’ve “learned” AI insofar is I don’t have a goddamn choice according to my employer and efficiency metrics. And 99% of the people who say they are “leaning into AI” are just prompting AI to do medial tasks they would’ve done anyways. THATS NOT LEARNING AI THATS JUST USING THE GODDAMN SERVICE YOU JACKASS. You’re not a ML PhD developing the next round of “groundbreaking” developments. The idea that there is going to be this subset of people who “learned” AI and accelerate their socioeconomic status is hilarious considering that AI is supposed to become the rule, not the exception. Don’t even get me fucking STARTED on the financial ramifications of this whole thing, good god.
So I guess I’m just destined to sit and fucking wait for everything to blow the fuck up while CEOs forecast 30% unemployment and the Gov waits until there’s another Jan 6th situation but with unemployable citizens. I’m getting to the point where the only thing that makes me feel like I am adequately preparing for the future is purchasing ammunition at the depot. I’m sorry I’m not a subscriber to the whole utopia outcome of AGI but there is not a single precedent in the present or historically that could possibly make me believe anything net-positive to come out of this whole thing other than total faith.
Shits so fucking stupid.
