Can I add a large amount of wood stove ash to my compost?

I cleaned out my wood stove today and ended up with a lot of wood ash.

I've read that wood ash can be beneficial for compost in small amounts, but I'm not sure how much is too much.

The ash comes from untreated firewood only.

Would you add a large amount to the compost, or is it better to use it gradually over time?
