Tradesperson Outside Access to Rental Property

NSW

Good morning all.

I live in a building that contains 4 units (3 rented out, 1 empty). The landlord owns the whole building, there is no strata. At the back of the building is a shared yard. The rental agreement is conducted through an agent.

Yesterday, 3 tradesman appeared in the yard - they were able to access from both the front and back of the building. My unit is ground-floor and my back door opens out to the yard. I am a woman living alone, and found it quite scary to suddenly have 3 men in the yard (my washing was hanging out there too, which I would have moved had I known they were coming).

The men were very polite and respectful, they were there to clear out the yard from weeds etc on the landlords request. It was not a visit for emergency repairs.

My question is this - is the landlord/agent required to give 2 days notice of this visit when the visit is confined to the outside of the building? I searched online and couldn’t find an exact answer - my understanding is that ‘premises’ would include the yard, but I am not sure. They did not come into my unit at all, although they did access the corridor of the building to get to the yard, as well enter the yard from the back alley via a gate.

Thank you for your time.
