What are the roots of 6e's "The Return of the Lichemaster" narrative campaign?

Lore/Books/Questions

To try and cut a long story short, I was looking into a Bretonnian special character from 6th edition, Sir Amalric of Gaudaron, and I found he was tied into the "Return of the Lichemaster" narrative campaign that was printed across several issues of White Dwarf around that period. Looking up that, I found that it's somehow connected to scenarios from older editions of Warhammer Fantasy, but I could never quite find a clear answer as to HOW. That in turn led me down the rabbithole and left me with more questions than answers, so can I please get some help straightening this out? To try and put my queries into specific order...
* Are all the scenarios in this campaign remakes of versions from past editions?
* Were they always connected like this, or had GW done some welding of previously disparate adventures?
* Was La Battle at Maisontaal always part of the Lichemaster campaign?
* Is "The Return of the Lichemaster" a remake of the original "Terror of the Lichemaster" from Warhammer Fantasy 2nd edition, or a sequel?
* How does the 6e version of RoTL compare to the Warhammer Roleplay 1st edition adventure module "Lichemaster", which was ALSO known as "Return of the Lichemaster"?
* Did Sir Amalric ofGaudaron appear in past editions, or was he invented for 6th edition?
