I’ve seen companies scale global teams well, and I’ve seen them fail. Here’s what usually makes the difference.

A lot of companies think building an offshore or remote team is mainly about finding cheaper talent.

From what I’ve seen, that’s rarely the real difference.

The companies that make it work usually do a few things well:

  1. They document the work before hiring If the process only exists in someone’s head, a new team will struggle no matter where they are.
  2. They keep ownership internal A remote or offshore team works best when the company still owns the standards, KPIs, and quality expectations.
  3. They invest in onboarding The first few weeks matter a lot. Skipping training usually creates rework later.
  4. They don’t treat cost savings as the whole strategy Lower cost helps, but consistency, retention, and visibility matter more long term.
  5. They build management structure early More people does not automatically mean more capacity. Someone still needs to coach, review, and improve the work.

Curious for other founders/operators here: what’s the biggest mistake you’ve seen companies make when scaling a remote or offshore team?
