Burrito Quest
I have recently made it my goal, nay, my quest to try all the recommended breakfast burritos in the city.
I've hit most of the places at least once, with two tries being enough for a rating. As such my list is as follows.
-
Montgomery Court (Park Ave)- IMO the tastiest of the bunch. It's got the flavor and its a good sized portion. I really dig the sriracha aioli and the cheddar cheese. My only demerit is that the burrito has a pretty uniform texture, whereas I like having a bit of variety in mine. Not a deal breaker by any means, though. I've had the "secret menu" version as well, but I'll have to try it again before I'd rate it.
-
Melo (NOTA)- Slightly behind in flavor, but as good in pretty much every way. I like the textures a bit better. The tomatillo salsa that comes on the side is good, although I wonder if they could add it into the burrito itself...
-
Public Provisions (Public Market)- Very good burrito that usually comes with a hefty portion size. The biggest downside is that the secondary ingredients tend to change often, so it's never quite the same twice. It also tends to be a bit more wet due to the pork and less egg-and-potato than the others. Nevertheless, it's always worth a try.
-
Neutral Grounds (Schoen Place) - Decent burrito, I would call it standard or average. Good size, good eggs and potatoes and sausage. Just needs something beyond the Franks Redhot in it to elevate it.
Honorable Mentions:
- Clementines (Fairport) - I've only had it once, since its a bit out of the way. It was pretty good, definitely worth the stop if you're in the area. Definitely has more of a Mexican bent than the rest, with beans and salsa. I'd probably put it in third place just from memory, but I'll need to try it again to be sure.
Other-than-Honorable mentions:
- Boulder Coffee (South Wedge) - It's definitely a breakfast burrito, and it'll do in a pinch, but its a far step down in quality compared to the others. At least the price is commensurate with the quality.
As an amateur breakfast burrito enthusiast, I'm always looking for more. I've got the Mexican food-truck guy at the Public Market on my radar, but haven't tried it yet. If you've got any other recommendations, please post them here for future Burrito Questers. I may update this as I find more.
