Leaving the game for a while?

Hello, I need to step back from the game for a while, might never come back to it as it is just sucking time out of my life and there's too much drama in a toxic server. But I'd like to keep the option because so many aspects of the game are fun. 

I'm wondering what exactly will happen to my shelter if I leave my alliance. I realize obviously if I return to the game I will be way behind everybody else but don't care about that too much. I know I will lose all resources except for those in the warehouse and the ones in chests, right. What about troops? Will I lose them all, presumably because of kill event? Is there any way of protecting any of the troops? Thanks for any feedback.
