Spread the love
So, I recently tried out Marathon during the free play this week and I wanted to just share something with whomever wishes to hear/read it.
TL:DR - Destiny and Marathon are both amazing games in their own right and have beautiful stories/worlds to discover. Why can't we have both? Sony, please let these both exist.
I've played Destiny 2 on/off since it launched on the Battle net launcher. Purchased it with WoW gold for both my wife and myself. I've enjoyed that game through much of its ups and downs, while agreeing with many of the criticisms, but I'm a filthy casual Dad gamer who doesn't play every season till there's no more enjoyment. I wind down for the evening, get kids to bed, then relax to play. D2 was fun as hell for this. General exploration around the worlds it created, running dungeons/patrols/raids with rando's, failing miserably in crucibles, all that it had to offer. I long abandoned the mindsets of "What will this run give ME?" or "I don't like it unless I win." and I have enjoyed so much of the things so many online complain about. Now don't get me wrong, criticism of things is entirely justified. Nothing is perfect. HOWEVER, the severity of the criticism is what is wrong more often than not. I don't have to get into detail about this for anyone that agrees to understand.
I saw the hate and frustration rising with the beginning of Marathon. This increased as D2 started to sink even lower with popularity. It was a deterrent for sure that I let dissuade me from checking out Marathon. I didn't play extraction shooters. The closest thing I had to this was Overwatch (not an extraction shooter). So, I wrote it off and just enjoyed the typical games I played.
Fast forward to D2s sunsetting and much controversy for Marathon. I saw renewed interest in D2 which is awesome, I dipped back into that to enjoy many of the changes that I missed playing and seeing the worlds more populated again. There was also the extended free weekend for Marathon. I was really digging the FPS games and figured, why not. My initial feel for the game was less than stellar to say the least. Played for a few, played a little more the next day, uninstalled. It was a stark difference from D2 and I just wasn't enjoying getting my teeth bashed in faster than the time I spent watching a sci-fi moth crawl around the loading screen.
I talked with my wife about the game, since she watched me play briefly, and explained what I liked and didn't like about it. Discussing it, I found that I was genuinely interested in the world of it. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to try it out again, so I reinstalled it. Began playing more, changing my play style, and got sucked into it. Wrote a quick first impression review, got feedback, then watched the Marathon trailers. The style just blows me away and is so awesome to watch. They give a very 28 Days Later but in the future vibe, where things are quiet and surreal, but absolute madness is just around the corner.
Alright, the point I'm getting at with this. Destiny and Marathon are entirely different, but both are absolutely amazing. So much so, that people are passionate about their opinions of them, whether that means they obsess and love them, or just love/hate them with varying whiplash emotions. I wish more people that enjoy both games were more vocal about it. The worlds of Destiny and Marathon BOTH deserve to be told and experienced. I want D3 to become reality. I want Marathon to have continued support, both from the Destiny community and Marathon, and vice versa. I want show/cinema adaptations of these amazing stories/worlds/characters/etc. Most of all, I just want to share my feeling about these and hope that others that feel the same can enjoy this read, and that those that don't feel the same can give them a chance.
Destiny is amazing. Marathon is amazing. I don't want to see hate towards one or the other. Let's all be better. Support Marathon. Support Destiny 3 demand. Eyes Up, Guardian/Runner.
