Stienhardt & Stones: Who We Are, What We Cut, and Why We Sell Direct

Every brand subreddit needs exactly one post explaining who is behind it and why you might give them money. This is ours. We will keep it factual.

Who is Stienhardt & Stones?

Stienhardt & Stones is a New York City lab-grown diamond company that cuts its own stones and sells them direct, with no retail layer in between. We spent years as a manufacturer, cutting for the trade, before opening to consumers. That history is why our catalog looks different from a typical diamond retailer's: it is built around what a cutting house can actually do, not around a reseller's inventory.

What we cut

The standards, and then the cuts we are known for. The modern Dutch Marquise, an elongated hexagonal cut with a crushed-ice pattern, which we standardized and named for the modern era. The Portuguese cut, more than 168 facets, where roughly one in three stones does not survive the wheel. The French Marquise, the Moval, the Elongated Hexagon, and a line of antique-style cuts built on pre-electric proportions. Every diamond we sell is lab-grown and ships with an independent report from IGI, GIA, or GCAL, and you can verify any report number on the lab's own site.

Why buy from the manufacturer

Three mechanical reasons, no adjectives:

  1. The price has fewer layers in it. Lab-grown typically runs 20 to 40 percent under comparable mined stones, and factory-direct removes the retail markup on top of that. Same stone, shorter path.
  2. The answers come from the bench. Ask us about a cut and the person answering can walk over and watch one being made. The numbers we quote, like that one-in-three loss rate, are ours, not a supplier's brochure.
  3. The warranty and the workshop are the same building. We cut it, we sell it, we stand behind it. There is no "we will check with the vendor."

The practical details: free shipping, free returns, financing available, a manufacturing warranty, and gemologist appointments in person in NYC or virtual. The catalog is at Stienhardt.com.

Why this subreddit exists

Most of what we post here will not try to sell you anything. We write about what cuts actually are, what things actually cost, and what to check before you buy, from anyone. The gemology is free either way. We think being useful in public is better marketing than adjectives, and we are comfortable being judged on that.

Questions about us, our stones, or whether lab-grown is right for you get straight answers, including, when it is true, "not from us." Ask away!
