Those who are medicated and intentionalky take breaks or or hiatus; Why and/or how?

Medication & Side Effects

To be clear, I'm not judging this decision. I'm genuinely curious what the reasoning might be for intentionally not taking medication daily if you have access and funds to do so.

I only realized I had ADHD after starting the journey into learning how to help my young son with ADHD and level 1 autism. My hasband has been diagnosed with ADHD since college (years before we met) and he's always been a beast when his medication can't be filled when needed. Once I realized that my perimenopausal self needed help dealing with my own shit before I could even try to help my son, I got my diagnoses and started Vyvanse.

This was only about two months ago, and I had your typical honeymoon phase, wondering why nobody told me sooner and just loving "NT" life. When the honeymoon was over, it was still very clear to me that this stuff was working and was right for me. In the meantime, we had my kid on every different medication under the sun until we found what worked for him. Life's been good!

Well, I ran out of meds quicker than I thought this month and couldn't get more until I had an appointment. This was fine, and it only left me off the meds for a day and a half. In this time frame, I slowly tuelrned into a total rotten potato. I went to bed tired last night and woke up like a zombie had eaten my brain. Couldn't function at work, even things that I would have no problem doing pre medication.

I'm also on ADHD parenting and Autism parenting subs, and I've noticed a lot of people skip medicating their kid during summer breaks, or over the weekend. I've also read that some of you intentionally give yourself med breaks. This is clearly not an uncommon thing to do.

My question first is; why and when? What benefit do you find in doing this? Do you only really need the meds to help you at work and then just raw-dog the weekends? Do you only need it for huge projects and then are able to handle life better when you're life is more chill? Also; how do you do it? I felt like such shit today, and it hadn't even been 48 hours since my last dose. I didn't think there'd be so much of a "withdrawal" on this med (and I've been through Paxil withdrawals shivers).

Anyway, do the pros of taking a break outweigh the cons in some way that I'm not understanding? Do you get the honeymoon back if you try this and suffer through the potato days? Asking mostly for myself, but also for my son, who has expressed interest in skipping one day a week. Plus, summer break is upon us, which means I'll need to be MORE on top of it in order to handle my son, not less. Thoughts?
