Myth: More Facets Means More Diamond Sparkle

The myth: more facets, more sparkle. Facet counts show up in marketing copy the way megapixels used to headline camera ads, and for the same reason. A number is easy to sell.

We market a 168-facet cut ourselves. So take it from a seller with skin in the game: the number does not work the way listings imply.

The kernel of truth

Facet count absolutely changes what you see. More, smaller facets produce more, smaller flashes: glitter, shimmer, constant movement (the crushed-ice look). Fewer, larger facets produce bolder, slower flashes: fire and contrast. Count sets the character of the light. On that much, the marketing is honest.

What count cannot do

Count does not set the amount of light. A diamond's light return lives and dies on angles and proportions. Cut the pavilion too deep or too shallow and light leaks out the bottom of the stone no matter how many facets you stacked on top. That was the entire point of Tolkowsky's 1919 thesis, the math behind the modern round brilliant: he did not add facets, he calculated correct angles for the 58 that already existed. The best-performing diamond design in history did not win on count. It won on math.

A 168-facet stone with sloppy angles is a dull stone with extra steps. A 58-facet round with perfect proportions will beat it on raw light return every time. When we cut our Portuguese, the facets exist to create a specific layered shimmer, not to win a number contest, and every single one still has to sit at the correct angle or the stone is ruined. Often literally: one in three high-facet stones does not survive our wheel.

Verdict

Facet count is a style choice. Cut quality is the performance. Buy the performance first, then pick the style.

In practice: read facet counts as a description of how a stone will sparkle, never as a score of how much. For quality, use the lab's cut grade where one is given, and judge the stone itself on video under normal light.
