The paradox of choice
I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit to post this in; because I'm technically not in college, but I just need some perspective. I recently graduated high school in May, and as of right now I've told everyone that I'm taking a gap semester and going to UIC in the spring. That is technically my plan, my uncle lives in the suburbs of Chicago and said that I could live with him, everything is basically set I just have to apply for the spring semester once admissions open. The issue is the admissions process. One of the main reasons why I decided to take a gap semester is bc UIC requires to to write an essay on why you want to major in your field, which made me rethink and ultimately change my major completely. I have pretty above average grades and test scores, but I feel as though my extracurriculars are lacking. When I first tried to apply to school fall of my senior year it stressed me out so bad I almost thought that I just didn't want to go to college at all. I also think the lack of direction (not sure if that's the right word that I'm trying to use) from my parents is making my situation worse. My dad isn't too much in the picture but all he does is try to convince me to go to his alma mater and go into high paying degrees (I wanted to do accounting at first but switched my major to poli sci so he's a bit mad at that) and my mom is more supportive of whatever I do. My issue with her is that she hasn't done my fasfa, I've had my part done since october and she always brushes it off when I ask her to do her part. I'm not blaming them entirely, I am responsible for what I do with my life, I just wish I had more guidance throughout my high school career and I guess my life in general. I think the lack of direction has caused this paradox of choice, as the title says, where I have too many options, I could just not go to college if I wanted to, or go to college when I'm 40, or of course I could go in the spring of 2027 like I planned. I just feel stuck. Sorry this is just a bunch of word salad.
Basically; I'm scared of the admissions process because I'm overthinking it and don't have anyone to help me, so I've become stagnant
