Decline DO A and re-apply?

🔮 App Review

Hi all,

I applied this past cycle and received 1 II turned R to my in-state MD school and 4 DO II (1 R, declined 2, and 1 A). One of the DO II I received in May and I just got the news that I was accepted! Because I didn't get the II until late and didn't get the A until after AMCAS opened, I had already prepped my re-app and submitted it the day AMCAS opened on the 28th.

I made some considerable improvements to my re-app like taking a class similar to one I did poor in undergrad (got an A this time), increased my volunteering hours a lot because I had close to none last time, and got clinical experience as an EMT (800 hours). Before being an EMT, I had about 2,000 hours as a TMS technician at a psych clinic andThe MD school I Interviewed at and got the R gave me the impression they prefer primary care or EM clinical experience. I also re-wrote my personal statement. I also have another publication under review at Nature right now that is likely to published soon.

My stats: 3.62 (rigorous undergrad institution), 503 -> 511 MCAT.

ECs: TMS tech 2.5k hours, EMT 800 hours, 2.5k hours research with 1 pub, 1 pub now under review, honors thesis and 3rd place award for poster presentation, and another conference presentation. ~100 volunteer hours, 40 shadowing hours, orientation leader, writer for school newspaper, and TA for cell bio class.

I'm conflicted because the DO school I got into is one of the founding 5, good location, good reputation, good clinical rotations and matches pretty well. The con is it is also super expensive. I also want to go into trauma surgery and thus, want to match a general surgery residency so I don't know how hard this would be if I take the A and go to this school.

On the other hand, I do have a good shot I think at my in-state MD school for re-application especially with improvements. Also, I already did the work to submit my primary app for AMCAS so although I'm hyped about the DO A, I can't help but also wonder if it is worth it to just continue with re-application.

Anyways, I'd love some guidance/thoughts on this given my situation and also the specialty I want to go into. Thank you and any and all advice is appreciated!
