Accounting industry switch?
Im a guy in my mid 20s with a bachelors in accounting currently living in SoCal. I was recently laid off from my bookkeeping role and have been doing some soul searching on what kind of career I really expect from accounting.
Up until now I have done nothing but public accounting. So far my employment history in accounting includes two internships (one Big 4 audit), and my most recent job as an AP clerk/bookkeeper at a boutique CPA firm.
What I’ve come to realize is that I don’t enjoy really the culture of public accounting and I don’t see myself pursuing it in the future. I don’t like the office politics, the toxic work environment (eat your hours or you’re a slacker), or the “sink or swim” mentality that many firms embrace. If I’m being honest I get tired out by constant social interaction and fear that if I’m not on my managers good side, my livelihood is at stake. Public is definitely not my vibe as I’ve learned firsthand.
What kind of accounting would better suit me? I want 40-50 hrs/week outside of busy season, a pension, and more job stability than public. I enjoy the puzzle aspect of accounting so a job where I troubleshoot or investigate a problem would be more enjoyable for me than a client facing role.
I’m thinking industry or government but I’m not sure if there are other niches out there. I am currently studying for the CPA with no sections completed, just to do something productive while unemployed. Open to any suggestions!
