Prologue: Why Should We Revisit Iran?

When we open the news, the Iran we see is almost always framed through war, sanctions, and unrest. It appears as one of the most visible flashpoints in international politics, a shadowed corner on the map, and, in many people’s minds, a distant and mysterious country tinged with danger.

We have grown used to defining it through fragments of breaking news: political turmoil, a closed society, and a complex symbol woven from oil, religion, and geopolitics. Yet few people pause to ask: before this land became the Iran we know today, what was it?

From the ancient beliefs that took shape on the Iranian plateau three thousand years ago, to the imperial splendor of the “King of Kings” more than twenty-five centuries ago, this land was never a mere margin of world history. At its height, the Achaemenid Empire stretched from the Nile to the Indus. The royal proclamation issued after Cyrus the Great entered Babylon, with its language of tolerance and restoration, later came to be seen as an important early symbol of tolerant rule.

On the gold and silver vessels of the Sasanian court, one can almost hear the endless camel bells of the Silk Road’s caravans. The sacred fire of Zoroastrianism, too, illuminated the spiritual world of the Iranian plateau through the long centuries. This land was once a crossroads of world civilizations, a realm of poetry and art, and a vital meeting ground where Persian, Arab, Indian, and Central Asian storytelling traditions intertwined.

The civilization rooted in this land is older than we often imagine, and far deeper and more resilient than what we see in the headlines.

The Iran of today is not a political name that appeared out of nowhere. It lives in the cuneiform still visible on the stone columns of Persepolis. It shines in the blue domes of Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan, also known today as Imam Square, where the light seems to carry the memory of a thousand years. It breathes in the verses of Ferdowsi, Saadi, and Hafez—poetry that has passed through wars, dynastic change, and historical upheaval, yet remains warm and alive.

Every inch of this land is layered with centuries of civilization. Every time Iran appears in the news, behind the headline lies a history that has too often been simplified and misunderstood, yet has never truly fallen silent.

When we speak of Iran, we are never speaking only of the present. We are speaking of a civilizational continuum thousands of years long, stretching from ancient reverence for sacred fire to the majesty of empire. We are speaking of how Persian-Iranian civilization, through conquest, conversion, fragmentation, fusion, and renewal, managed to preserve its roots and its soul.

In this series, we will move beyond the fog of the headlines and return to the scenes of history: from the fire altars of Zoroastrianism to the “King of Kings” of the Persian Empire; from the brilliant afterglow of the Sasanian dynasty to the cultural fusion of the Islamic age; and finally to the modern era, when this land, caught in the shifting currents of global power, struggled with hardship and stubborn dignity to find its place.

We will not reduce this story to simple judgments of right and wrong, nor will we pile up cold dates and events. We simply want to rediscover, together with you, this country so often obscured by the labels of the news: to read its past, understand its present, and see why it has stood, again and again, under the spotlight of the world.

Welcome to Sacred Fire and Kingship.

Let us step into a Persian-Iranian civilization thousands of years old—a legacy too often underestimated.
