Is there a good way to ask professors for a job reference after a bad burnout and a flunking streak? š¬
Iām taking a break from college after a really bad burnout, (letās go AuDHD inevitabilities woooooo!) and have 98 credit hours racked up. I recently attended a job fair for the public school district where I am and found out that in my state 60 credit hours is enough to apply to be a paraprofessional, (from my understanding basically a teaching assistant for either special ed or remedial schools,) BUT the application also requires 3 professional references. I did really well for the first year or two, had a 4.0, took summer classes, speedran most of my degree very quickly at 5-6 classes a semester. But then I hit a wall where I stopped functioning completely and flunked nearly every class I took for a solid year (except for a language course for a language I already spoke at an intermediate levelā¦) and now my GPA is a 2.49. I think I probably take about twice the amount of time on literally everything that my classmates did trying to work around my fun little neurological quirks, especially considering I may have chosen one of the worst degrees possible for my bunk ass brain (history) which required a copious amount of reading. I tried really hard to soldier on until the point where I literally couldnāt drag myself out of bed to go to class (a horrible mistake ngl) and I eventually just⦠stopped showing up.
There was other stuff going on too, like I had deadbeat roommates that didnāt pay rent/bills so all the financial obligations or multiple people fell squarely on me, I couldnāt always afford my ADHD meds because of them, my ADHD medication also sloooowly stopped working over time and the school doctor (who usually prescribed my meds) was pretty unhelpful when I went in about it (and I suspect wrote me off as ādrug seekingā for asking about a different medication based on how I was treated and the way my prescriptions magically shrunk, even though I canāt prove anything.) School disability office was basically worth less than nothing from the beginning and refused to help me figure out what accommodations would help me, and told me I needed to tell them and they would make no suggestions ā¦Which of course I wasnāt gonna know what that was as someone diagnosed as an adult whoād never had the luxury of school support before, so I just went without. Other personal life drama happened on top of all that. Had to manage without a computer for a year and a half and was writing all my essays on my phone, on which I could not format anything properly or do footnotes which made the writing process way more stressful than it would have otherwise been, if not downright impossible. (Happened during a final too! When I was like 90% done! I ragequit that one.) There were some programs for support through financial hardship or for getting a laptop, but they were restricted to students who lived on campus, which I did not. Basically everything went wrong and I kinda had absolutely zero support despite pretty desperately trying to claw for it.
Anyway, back to the main question. Though my professors have pretty universally praised my writing when I turned it in, my track of record of actually doing that is spotty and only got worse and worse over time. So Iām not sure how to ask for a reference⦠or if any of them will be willing to back me up at all. If I tried to explain my situation do you think theyād be understanding or would that shoot me in the foot? Despite my string of failures and overabundance of flaws I am still ultimately a prideful creature and really donāt want to put how pathetic I am on blast to them. Pretty sure itād be unprofessional anyway. Should I at least be honest to my supervisor and ask her how I could possibly market my shambling corpse as worth backing to the other professors? Am I cooked? Or should I ask her about how the hell to get my shit together so this doesnāt happen a second time when I eventually come back? Should I just switch degrees when I do??? Help please.
