I wish someone had just told me the risks
I’m Gen Z (23f). For my whole life, I was told therapy was the key to health and happiness. In pursuit of that, I hired one. I’m aware enough that I knew this wouldn’t necessarily be a walk in the park (and that support would be needed if something “went awry” along the way…)
That “support” ended up being the icing on the cake. The most traumatic thing that happened.
I just wish someone had told me that therapists can betray you. That they can abandon you. That they can harm you. I wish someone had told me my rights, or how to properly and healthily terminate.
This is coming from someone whose parent is a damn therapist, by the way. And I was still unaware of the risks. This is also coming from someone who has a different therapist now who (so far) has been wonderful.
After an entire year with my former therapist, all she did was make things more painful and complicated. I have actual trauma from that experience. It was FAR more painful than what I had literally been going to therapy for.
I just wish somebody would’ve told me, or I may have been far more cautious.
Oh well.
