Out of the Closet and Into the Wallet: How do I get started in this?
Hey all! I recently dug up my vintage Pokemon cards that have been sitting in a closet for 20 years. I’ve done an inventory and am trying to decide what to do next: what to grade, what to sell, what to hold, and what to give to my kid to play with. Most of the cards are in very good shape. I never played, just collected.
I’ve started to do some research on general price points for these, but don’t know enough about the market yet.
Collection details
Base - complete set. A sizable amount of shadowless cards (holos and non). Charizard and first edition Venusaur are getting graded. 1st edition squirtle
Jungle - nearly complete set with a few first edition holos (vileplume, victreebell). A few of the rare non-holos are 1st editions as well. Lots of common and uncommon first editions
Fossil - almost complete set, a few first edition rare non-holos, uncommon, and commons
Team rocket - multiple first edition holos (Blastoise, Dragonite, magneton, arbok, weezing, machamp, sneak attack, and a few others). Lots of rare 1st edition non-holos, as well as uncommon and common
Gym heroes - 1st edition Charizard and seadra. Grading Charizard
Japanese - Blaine’s Charizard, dark dragonite, Erika’s Venusaur, and a few others.
A few questions!
What’s the market like for the rare non-holo first editions? I’m thinking if PSA brings back the value tier, I might get a few graded.
How do folks do bundles?
Are there interesting marketing tactics like putting a whole evolution together (like bulbasaur, ivysaur, and Venusaur)?
Do people actually care about the shadowless cards if they’re not graded?
Any non-eBay marketplaces you recommend for a collection like this?
Any scams to be aware of?
Anything you recommend holding long-term?
Thanks!
