Income-Based Repayment Plan Payment Increase
I am so stressed and looking for any advice from those in similar situations. I am a public school teacher, and I just finished my second year of teaching. I got a notice that my income driven repayment plan recertification was automatic. I have been paying $19.21 per month, which was fantastic. Now, it is going up to $221.44 per month starting in September. I know that this doesn't seem terrible, but I am a teacher and barely getting by as is. I called and they basically told me there’s nothing that I can do. They told me there was a plan that would be $170 per month, but I can’t find that on my end. All plans are higher monthly payments than the current plan that I’m on. Apparently, the recertification that took information from the IRS, took into account a one-time stipend that I received, as a part of my yearly salary. I guess I am just confused on why it is not based on my monthly income instead? When comparing my monthly paystub from when I first applied in 2024 to now, there is only a $300 difference. I did become the cheer coach for my school, so that bumped my monthly income up by $160.. but, I still cannot afford this payment. I don’t want to stop paying and put them in forbearance, but I don’t know what to do. I could use any and all advice. Thank you in advance.
