Thoughts about a change in the story I've noticed

I've finished my first run a few days ago and I am now starting the second run but I have something on my mind that I was trying to figure out, maybe you can help

Why have they changed the story of the focus stones?

I am not saying it is inherently worse or better, I am just curious why they turned from the stones that HELPED the mages in creating the barrier to being the source of HINDERENCE

Now they are a "natural phenomenon" that just happened to rise from the ground at the time they cast the barrier which disturbed the balance of magic

​

Does this now imply that they are connected to the Sleeper directly? In the OG the Sleeper was the one who interfered and now in the remake, it did so through the focus stones?

I am curious to hear your thoughts about this change and what it can imply moving forward
