Why you should not drink today

Today is my 1 year soberversary! The main feeling I have is gratefulness. This past year would've gone very differently if I'd been drinking. There was a round of layoffs at my job. There's no way I would've survived that if I'd been drinking. I also had a close family member in the hospital for an extended period. I don't know how I would've juggled visiting and helping them with drinking. I'm so glad I faced everything that happened this year sober.

The thing that trapped me into drinking for so long after I knew I needed to quit was the idea that there's always tomorrow. But the truth is you don't know what tomorrow will bring. You might be heading into the best year of your life or one of the most challenging. You'll enjoy the good times more deeply and rise to the challenges better if you're sober.

So if you're stuck thinking there's always tomorrow, I hope you'll make today day 1. And if you've already stopped drinking, I hope you'll be generous with yourself and know that just 1 more day sober is an investment in yourself that will pay off when life happens.
