I've Had Enough (A Slightly Different Take)

Opinion

From the beginning, I was a proud convert from Mint during the early days of beta testing before public release. I'm not a power user, but I feel I'm competent enough to qualify as Monarch's core audience.

Still - I just canceled, even after initially accepting the 50% off renewal just to see if I could hang on a little longer. We're talking about 80+ hours of my life over the last several years invested in making this platform work.

It's 2026. Wallets are tighter than ever, and Monarch became an exercise in "how much pain is this platform creating?" versus "what gains do I get by using it?". I shared this feedback in my exit survey as well.

For the standard user, the journey is that after the initial hurtles of getting everything set up the way you want and hope, you're able to sit back and enjoy all the value the platform has to offer with the standard amount of ongoing maintenance.

But I think Monarch has missed how the user journey evolves over time.

In the case of long-term users, it's not about the value that's brought to you because that value just becomes....assumed. It's literally what you're paying for.

Instead, for long-term users, the subscription price becomes an exercise in how much pain you're willing to endure.

For all the bumps in the road...Goals 2.0, the rollout of Reports and Investments, the introduction of Flexible Budgeting, the nightmare that is Recurring Merchants, the privacy issues, the corporate enshittification with AI, the surprise addition of Monarch Plus....I'm finally ready to say that not only is the subscription price not worth the value the platform is bringing to long-term users, it's REALLY not worth the pain it actively causes long-term users.

I've chosen to go back to a manual spreadsheet, literally (god I hate that word).

If I'm going to have to check my accounts every day/week/month to make sure Monarch is doing what it should, I might as well just cut out the middle man.
