Rick Owens has spent over three decades proving one thing: the coolest thing you can wear is the unwavering belief in your own weirdness. And nowhere is that more evident than in the architectonic statement sitting on top of his head.

“My hair is fake, my body is fake and my teeth are kind of fake.” That’s Owens’s own deadpan admission, delivered with the same casual shrug he’s given to a lifetime of fashion rules. For a man whose “very simple recipe” is “a black and white, Art Deco, Cecil B. DeMille lurid Bible Epic,” hair is never just hair—it’s a declaration. Whether he’s wearing it long, black, and licking down his back or championing the aggressively architectural “skullet” on his runway, Owens treats the head like the most important architectural element of the body. “Hair and shoes say it all,” he famously said. “Everything in between is forgivable as long as you keep it simple.”

The man who turns Kevlar into couture and sneakers into battle armor has finally come for our insecurities about thinning crowns. If the industry obsesses over perfectly-coiffed conformity, Owens is the one sending a race of giant, beautiful techno-punks down the runway to save us from ourselves. He doesn’t just embrace the alternative—he makes it aspirational. “If I can make weirdness aspirational,” he says, “I will have done what I set out to do.”

So here’s to Rick Owens, the dark fantasist who taught us that indifference is the greatest aphrodisiac and that hair should be a conversation, not a compromise.

The high priest of hair rebellion, and he doesn’t care what you think
