What to do for a returning player?

Haven’t played since beyond light really. Just bought the collection and jumping back in. Do I need to play through the campaigns? I saw sunsetting is gone. Can I use old weapons still (recluse mountaintop etc)? If not, what’s the benefit of using newer weapons? Just kind of lost on what to actually do as someone who hasn’t played in a few years. Thanks yall
