Before there were ironic skullets or architectural bald statements, there was Marlon Brando. The man who redefined masculinity on screen also redefined what it means to lose your hair in Hollywood—and he did it with the kind of swagger that makes other men nervous.

Let’s talk about Don Vito Corleone. That slicked-straight-back, receded-hairline, balding-and-proud-of-it look? That wasn’t a costume choice. That was Brando being Brando. He started losing his hair at a fairly young age, but he never let it faze him. In fact, he weaponized it. The mob-boss hairstyle—slicked back, thin on top, utterly unapologetic—suited his bold, zestful, larger-than-life personality to a T. And the world fell in love with a balding man.

Brando didn’t just accept his hair loss; he owned it. For The Formula in 1980, he demanded to organize his own hair and makeup—and showed up with an almost completely bald shaved head, bar a few carefully combed strands. For Apocalypse Now, he shaved his head to match Joseph Conrad’s description of Kurtz as “impressively bald”. The man turned thinning hair into a character choice.

Of course, Brando had a few things to say on the subject. Of Frank Sinatra, he once cracked: “He’s the kind of guy that when he dies, he’s going up to heaven and give God a bad time for making him bald”. He was just as blunt about himself. In Patricia Bosworth’s biography, Brando reflected: “I’m a balding, middle-aged failure. I’ve tried everything… \[sleeping around\], drinking, working. None of them mean anything”.

Classic Brando: even his self-deprecation sounds like a threat.

So here’s to the original patron saint of the receding hairline. The man who proved that a thinning crown doesn’t diminish your presence—it just makes you look like you’ve been in charge longer than anyone cares to remember.
