A better trigger than rolling at 21 DTE
Roll CSPs and CCs at 21 DTE.. why?
Apparently to avoid the gamma risk. Well, this thing ended up costing me a few times and I started questioning that.
As I see it,
high gamma risk is just an indication that being close to expiration means that price changes are now more significant... They are a result, not a cause.
It’s not a useless rule don't get me wrong. If you’re new, it keeps you from sitting inside expiration week with no plan and exposing yourself to some risk. Fine, its a bit more stable managing it but here you are apparently making money on selling time and earning on volatility and then shooting yourself in the leg...
That rule is a statistical tool, not a stock analysis tool, and if you follow it mechanically, you are substituting a greek for a thesis.
And the bottom of it all, the only risk is stock movement price - what does impact stock movement price? Investor interest, sector rotation, stock news and events.
At its core it's the stock, not the gamma. So, when gamma risk gets bigger I'm actually fine because I did the correct steps before, conservative delta when picking the trade + got informed about the stock.
Anyways, lets stick to options.
Maybe this brings some good reasoning behind my standpoint - A CSP that’s OTM and "doing its thing" is not the same trade as a CSP getting crushed after bad news.
So, I don't like how this is oversimplified and with this below I tried to do it right, let me know what you think of it!
Solution: Trade efficiency > DTE second.
My perspective here: I watch my trades from the "employee" standpoint - I ask myself "okay, how good/efficient is this worker working for me?".
Another perspective, maybe simpler one: "How efficiently is my money working for me per day?"
If I’m only up 18% at 21 DTE, but the put is still OTM and the stock is acting fine, I’m not rolling just to feel disciplined. That’s just going through a hassle of getting filled again and to obey a calendar day. That to me doesn't make sense.
I like sharp rules so here's what I have written down:
IF OTM and calm -> hold until profit target or efficiency trigger.
IF Fast profit -> close or roll to a fresh setup.
Strike getting tested -> look for an out/down roll for credit.
No credit available -> stop forcing it.
Thesis broken -> close or take the smallest clean loss.
Actually want shares -> assignment is not a mistake it’s just the wheel doing wheel stuff.
I put these rules inside quantwheel alerts:
Covered calls are a little different to me.
- If I want the shares, I’ll roll up/out if situation forces me to.
- If I don’t care, let them get called and reload.
I do 1) on on my long term holds and 2) on some volatile/uncertain stocks but which are also good companies (IREN for example).
Some traders disagree and like the fixed 21 DTE exit. Okay, I just think DTE should start the review and not make the decision.
Hope this was insightful!
