Does handwriting notes actually help, or is it just a productivity myth?
Every study advice post says "write by hand, don't type." The research does back it up — slower processing = deeper encoding. But I think the real variable isn't *how* you write, it's *whether you're thinking* while you write.
I type fast enough that typing doesn't require thinking. Handwriting slows me down and forces me to paraphrase. But so does any method where you're not just copying.
What I've found works:
- Diagrams and sketches > text for anything process-based
- Redrawing from memory > re-reading
- Mixing both — type the structure, draw the details
Personally moved to a stylus + tablet setup this semester (using an app called Eleganote) and the freehand drawing for diagrams made a big difference for subjects like anatomy and circuits.
Do you guys think the medium matters, or is it all about the habit?
