SIM card size and phone compatibility

Hey there. I'm thinking to visit Japan and wanted to ask about the sim card used for tourist purposes. Do I have to cut a sim card in order to place it inside my phone? (I have Samsung). Are there any problems with the compatibility/size/country restrictions?

Thanks in advance.
