Measuring no voltage between two legs of a component

I cant wrap my head around why there is no voltage drop between the resistor? It doesnt make sense because they clearly arent on the same potential? is it because of the large resistor i modeled as a voltmeter that acts like an open circuit? I am trying to understand the concept of this circuit that measures the resistance of a voltage source using another source for voltage compensation. I was asking myself why the voltmeter measures the resistance Ri of the source after compensating using the second source U_v so that the voltmeter V shows 0V difference. After switching the switch, the voltmeter shows the voltage difference across Ri which i dont get why?
